Looking to purchase a massage chair to alleviate chronic pain or help you recover from injury? You may be eligible to use either your Flex Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) as payment!

Massage Chair Store has partnered with Sika Health to make the best use of your health benefits — all you need is a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). An LMN from a healthcare provider outlines how a treatment method is essential to your health and recovery based on your previous and current symptoms. Once approved by your insurance company, you’ll be reimbursed for the items purchased with your HSA/FSA.

Here’s how:

1
SEE IF YOU PRE-QUALIFY
FOR AN LMN

Fill out a quick survey to tell our provider team about your qualifying symptom(s).

2
GET YOUR LMN AND
MAKE YOUR PURCHASE

After you receive your LMN, purchase a massage chair on the MCS site and choose Sika to checkout with your HSA/FSA.

3
GET REIMBURSED

Sika will email your receipt and next steps for substantiation. Once complete, you’ll be reimbursed!

FAQs

  • What is a Letter of Medical Necessity?

An LMN, or Letter of Medical Necessity, is like a doctor’s note. It’s issued by a healthcare provider to outline the medical reasons why a particular product or service is medically necessary for an individual’s health and qualifies your purchase to be HSA/FSA eligible. LMNs demonstrate that an expense is needed to diagnose, treat or alleviate a medical symptom, rather than for general health or wellness purposes.

  • Why do I need a Letter of Medical Necessity to purchase a massage chair?

If you want to use your HSA/FSA funds to purchase a massage chair, you’ll need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), which is why we’ve partnered with Sika to help you with this process.

Certain products are eligible for purchase with HSA/FSA funds if they treat, cure, prevent, diagnose, or alleviate a medical need. For instance, items such as adhesive bandages are always eligible, as they serve a solely medical purpose. However, there are “dual-eligible” products that can be used for general health and wellness or for specific medical purposes if recommended by a healthcare provider based on your individual needs. While massage chairs can be used for general relaxation, the massage treatment they provide can also alleviate certain pains and chronic conditions.

  • How do I get a Letter of Medical Necessity?

You can request a Letter of Medical Necessity through Sika. If approved, you’ll be able to check out using your HSA/FSA funds for your qualified purchase.

To request an LMN, you must:

    • Chat with a certified healthcare provider to determine if you qualify for an LMN
    • Complete intake forms, similar to how you would at a doctor’s office
    • Consult with a team of healthcare providers, who will evaluate your eligibility

Once you have your LMN in hand, you can return to the Massage Chair Store and shop as usual. During checkout, you’ll simply select the Sika payment method to utilize your HSA/FSA funds.

  • How long does it take to get approved for a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Sika’s healthcare provider team strives to provide a response within 12 business hours after you submit your LMN intake forms.

  • How long is a Letter of Medical Necessity valid for?

Letters of Medical Necessity are valid for 12 months from the day they are signed and written.

  • How do I submit my Letter of Medical Necessity to my HSA/FSA provider?

After you complete a purchase using an LMN, you will need to submit your Letter of Medical Necessity and your receipt to either:

    1. Substantiate the purchase if you paid with your HSA/FSA or
    2. Get reimbursed if you paid with your credit/debit card.

    To do this:

    1. Log into your HSA/FSA account on your benefit administrator’s website
    2. Find the Reimbursement or Claims section
    3. Upload your receipt and Letter of Medical Necessity

Your administrator will process and evaluate your claim. Please note that some HSA/FSA benefits administrators may incorrectly deny reimbursement, so before purchasing a product with an LMN, you should consider contacting your administrator to determine if your purchases will be covered/reimbursed. You can learn more about what is eligible on the IRS page on Health Savings Accounts and Other Tax-Favored Health Plans.

If you are having trouble locating your itemized receipt or LMN, please contact Sika at [email protected]

  • Why wasn’t I approved for a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Sika’s independent healthcare provider may determine that you do not have symptoms demonstrating a medical necessity for a product or service. While you cannot use your HSA/FSA funds now, you can still use another payment method to complete your purchase on our site. We do not recommend reapplying.

  • I already have an LMN from another provider (not Sika), can I check out with Sika with this?

Unfortunately, we cannot accept non-Sika issued LMNs at this time.

  • It’s been more than 12 business hours since I’ve submitted my intake form. What is the status of my LMN?

We’re sorry for the inconvenience. Please reach out to Sika directly at [email protected] so that their team can assist you with the status of your LMN decision.

  • I never received/need an additional copy of my LMN/receipt. What should I do?

We’re sorry for the inconvenience. Please reach out to Sika directly at [email protected] so that their team can provide you with the requested documentation.

  • Can I check out with Sika if I’m purchasing an ineligible item along with an eligible item?

Yes! For mixed baskets, when a you selects the “Sika | Pay with HSA/FSA” payment method at checkout, your cart will automatically be split into an eligible and ineligible subtotal. You can then add the appropriate payment method for each subtotal to complete the checkout process.

  • I don’t have enough funds on my HSA/FSA card to cover my entire purchase. Can I still checkout with Sika?

Yes! Similar to mixed basket checkouts,  if you do not have enough funds on your HSA/FSA card, Sika will charge the available balance and allow you to provide a backup credit or debit card to handle the rest of the purchase.
